The Flaming Lips was established in the early 1980’s in Oklahoma. Brothers Mark and Wayne Coyne established the band alongside Michael Ivins and the trio began performing around town in local Oklahoma City venues. With the addition of Richard English in 1984, the Flaming Lips saw their initial lineup completed, and they released The Flaming Lips, their debut LP, in the same year.
Mark Coyne left the band shortly thereafter, and within two years, the Flaming Lips had signed to Pink Dust Records and released their first full-length debut, Hear It Is. The albums Oh My Gawd!! (1987) and Telepathic Surgery (1989) followed, before additional changes to the lineup. By the early 1990’s, the Flaming Lips had caught the attention of their first major record label, and signed to Warner Bros. to release their major label debut, Hit to Death in the Future Head. Appearances on such television shows as the Late Show with David Letterman and Beverly Hills, 90210 followed, as did a more extensive touring schedule, frequently opening up for such performers as Candlebox and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Since that time, the Flaming Lips has enjoyed steady success in the United States and even greater popularity overseas. The band has released a series of highly successful albums, including: Transmissions from the Satellite Heart (1993), Clouds Taste Metallic (1995), Zaireeka (1997), The Soft Bulletin (1999), Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002), At War with the Mystics (2006), Once Beyond Hopelessness (2008), Embryonic (2009), the Dark Side of the Moon (2010), and the Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends (2012.) The albums earned the Flaming Lips Grammys for Best Rock Instrumental Performance (for “The Wizard Turns On…”, 2007) and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (for At War with the Mystics, 2007.) The Flaming Lips were also nominated for a BRIT Award in 2007 for Best International Act.
The Flaming Lips continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Steven Drozd, Derek Brown, and Kliph Scurlock. They most recently released the album The Terror in 2013, featuring the song “Sun Blows Up Today,” which was featured in a Super Bowl commercial for Hyundai.
