The American folk/bluegrass band Trampled by Turtles was founded in the early 2000’s in Duluth, Minnesota. The band self-released a debut album, Songs from a Ghost Town, in 2004; the album didn’t chart but did garner the interest of BanjoDad Records.
After signing with the label, Trampled by Turtles released the additional albums Blue Sky and the Devil (2005) and Trouble (2007), before reaching their first breakthrough with the album Duluth (2008.) Duluth rose into the top ten on the bluegrass charts in the United States, and set the stage for the band’s biggest breakthrough, Palomino. Palomino reached the number one spot on the bluegrass charts, but also charted in the top twenty on the Heatseekers charts and into the top forty on the indie charts. The album remained on the bluegrass charts for nearly a full year and spawned the singles “Wait So Long,” “Victory,” “Where Is My Mind,” “Alone,” and “Walt Whitman.” Since that time, Trampled by Turtles has also released the albums Live at First Avenue (2013) and Wild Animals (2014), featuring the additional singles “Midnight on the Interstate” and “Are You Behind the Shining Star?”
With the current lineup of Dave Simonett, Tim Saxhaug, Dave Carroll, Erik Berry, and Ryan Young, Trampled by Turtles currently plays national festivals regularly, including such notables as Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Newport Folk Festival. The band’s music has also been featured in the television show Deadliest Catch and in the feature film The Way Way Back.
