Blue October Biography

The American alternative rock band known as Blue October was established in 1995 by founding member Justin Furstenfeld and his brother Jeremy. After bringing multi-instrumentalist Ryan Delahoussaye into the fold, Blue October got its first break in 1998, when Kid Rock’s manager, Michael Rand, caught a performance by the group in Houston. He took the band under his wing and booked them for hundreds of performance dates around the country, even though Blue October was still unsigned.

In the following year, Blue October signed with Universal Records and entered the studio to begin preparing a major label debut. The result, The Answers (1998) received some critical attention but didn’t chart. Neither did Blue October’s next two albums—Consent to Treatment (2000) and History for Sale (2003.) But it was the group’s fourth album, Foiled (2006), that finally landed them on the mainstream and rock charts, with a peak position of number eight on the latter. Rising to platinum status, Foiled set the stage for a steady run of success which Blue October has been enjoying ever since.

Between 2009 and 2016, Blue October released a quick succession of top five and number one alternative albums: Approaching Normal (2009), Any Man in America (2011), Sway (2013), and Home (2016.) The albums have spawned eleven top forty singles since the group’s inception, including: “Calling You,” “Hate Me,” “Into the Ocean,” “Dirt Room,” “Jump Rope,” and “The Chills.”

Blue October continues to perform and record with the lineup of Delahoussaye, the Furstenfeld brothers, Matt Noveskey, and Will Knaak. Blue October’s most recent album, I Hope You’re Happy, was another hit, rising to the number three spot on the alternative charts in the United States and peaking at the number twenty-eight spot on the mainstream charts. The album spawned the hits “I Hope You’re Happy” and “Daylight.”
