The American rock band Young the Giant was established in 2004 in Irvine, California, originally performing under the name The Jakes. At the time of its inception, some of the band’s members were still in high school and others attending college in various locations, but they managed to come together to record the debut EP, Shake My Hand. After the release of Shake My Hand, there were a number of changes to the group lineup. Later that year, the group performed at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, earning significant acclaim and the attention of Roadrunner Records.
After signing with the label, The Jakes officially changed their name to Young the Giant and released their self-titled major label debut. The album was a significant success, rising to the number two spot on the Heatseekers charts and into the top forty on the mainstream charts in the United States. The album spawned the chart-topping alternative singles “My Body,” “Cough Syrup,” “Apartment,” “It’s About Time,” and “Crystallized.” Since their debut, Young the Giant has also released the albums Mind over Matter (2014) and Home of the Strange (2016); both albums reached into the top twenty on the mainstream charts and spawned the singles “Mind over Matter,” “Amerika,” “Something to Believe In,” and “Silvertongue.”
Young the Giant continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Sameer Gadhia, Francois Comtois, Payam Doostzadeh, Eric Cannata, and Jacob Tilley. The band launched a significant summer tour in 2016 and recently began work on their next album, expecting within the coming year.
