The Canadian alternative indie rock band The Strumbellas was established in 2008 in Toronto, by founding member Simon Ward. After finishing the lineup with David Ritter, Jon Hembrey, Isabel Ritchie, Darryl James, and Jeremy Drury, The Strumbellas released a self-titled EP in 2009, earning significant critical acclaim.
Between 2009 and 2012, The Strumbellas played a number of venues throughout the country, establishing a growing fan base. In 2012, the band released My Father and the Hunter, their independent full-length debut, and the album immediately became their big breakthrough. My Father and the Hunter earned The Strumbellas not only a recording deal with Six Shooter Records, but also a Juno Award nomination for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.
My Father and the Hunter was followed by We Still Move, which did this time earn The Strumbellas a Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group. Since We Still Move, The Strumbellas have also released the album Hope (2016), which also earned the group another Juno Award – this time for the single, “Spirits.” The album was the group’s first to chart, rising to the top five in Canada, with “Spirits” rising to the number one spot also in the United States on the alternative charts.
In addition to their Juno Awards, The Strumbellas have also been recognized with multiple Canadian Radio Music Awards and Canadian Independent Music Awards. The Strumbellas just wrapped their first international tour of 2016 and 2017, bringing them to notable festivals such as Governor’s Ball and Bonnaroo.
