The Irish songwriter and musician Glen Hansard was born in 1970 in Dublin. Hansard is best recognized as the guitarist and vocalist for the group The Frames, but he is also well-known for his roles in films such as The Commitments and Once. Hansard is rumored to have started his first band after leaving school while still in the middle grades. By the time he was twenty, he had formed The Frames, and his career as a musician began to take off.
The Frames released their debut album, Another Love Song, in 1991, and between 1995 and 2006, they released a number of albums which charted in the top forty on the Irish charts, include the number one album Burn the Maps (2004.) In 2006, Glen Hansard released The Swell Season, his first album without The Frames, in collaboration with Bertrand Galen, Marja Tuhkanen, and Marketa Irglova. He also starred in the Irish film Once (2016), which earned Hansard an Academy Award for Best Original Song (for “Falling Slowly”) and two Grammy Award nominations.
In 2012, Glen Hansard launched a solo career with the album Rhythm and Repose, which charted internationally and rose into the top five on the charts in Ireland. That same year, Hansard’s song “Take the Heartland” was featured on the soundtrack to the film The Hunger Games. Although Hansard has not disbanded The Frames permanently, he continues to record and release music as a solo artist, with Didn’t He Ramble (2015) being his most recent release. The album earned Hansard a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album.
