Australian singer-songwriter Alex Lahey always knew that she wanted to be a musician. Lahey grew up in Melbourne, where by the time she was thirteen she had started playing the guitar and sax, ultimately entering university to study jazz music. During her time at school, she began performing with a local band, for whom she played sax and wrote some songs.
But Lahey truly wanted to strike out on her own. After selling her car to pay for studio time, she wrote and recorded her debut EP; the lead track, “You Don’t Think You Like People Like Me,” earned her accolades from Pitchfork and a bit of competition money to keep her going for awhile. A performance at Splendour in the Grass followed, and a J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year. By late 2016, record labels had started to take notice of her talents. After signing with Dead Ocean Records in January of 2017, Alex Lahey entered the studio to prepare for a feature-length album debut.
The result, I Love You Like A Brother, was a critical success, earning Lahey mentions by high profile publications such as Spin Magazine, which tapped the album as one of their “Favorite Overlooked Albums of 2017.” Since that time, Alex Lahey has been performing throughout Australia, Europe, and the United States, gathering a growing fan base. Clearly, Lahey is an artist on the rise and one to watch in the coming years. Her latest tour is expected to run into the spring of 2018, before the artist returns to the studio for her next album.
