The alternative rock band known as Guster was established in 1991 by founding members Brian Rosenworcel, Ryan Miller, and Adam Gardner. The three musicians met in Boston while attending Tufts University and began performing together at coffee houses and small venues throughout the city area. Guster recorded its first independent album, Parachute, while the men were still in college, in 1994. It didn’t take long before the buzz started to grow on the college scene.
But Guster was still eager for a breakthrough, which came after recording their second album, Goldfly. By 1998, they had signed with Sire Records and started work on their major label debut. Although the result, Lost and Gone Forever, wasn’t a huge hit upon its release in 1999, it did spawn the adult alternative hit, “Fa Fa.” Lost and Gone Forever also set the stage for Keep It Together, which rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts in the United States. It also gave Guster the group’s first number one hit, with “Amsterdam.” The single “Careful” also fared well, rising into the top forty on the alternative charts and hitting the number three spot on the adult alternative charts.
Guster’s music and energetic live performances have allowed the band to endure and thrive well into the new millennium, even nearly thirty years after the band’s inception. Guster’s additional albums include: Ganging Up on the Sun (2006), Easy Wonderful (2010), and Evermotion (2015), all of which have been top ten hits on the alternative or rock charts in the United States and top forty hits on the mainstream charts. Notable singles from Guster include: “One Man Wrecking Machine,” “Satellite,” “Do You Love Me?,” and “Simple Machine.”
Guster continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Rosenworcel, Miller, Gardner, and Luke Reynolds. Guster’s latest album, Look Alive, features the singles “Look Alive” and “Overexcited,” and was released in January of 2019.
