The alternative rock band known as Cake (often stylized in all caps, as CAKE), was established in Sacramento, California, in 1991 by founding members Frank French, Greg Brown, Vince DiFiore, and John McCrea. Known for its blend of everything from hip hop to country to Mariachi, the band toured the San Francisco club scene extensively in the early 1990’s, eventually garnering the attention of Capricorn Records.
After signing with Capricorn, Cake re-released a previously independent album, Motorcade of Generosity, in 1995. The album featured the top forty single "Rock ‘n’ Roll Lifestyle" and set the stage for the follow-up, Fashion Nugget, which arrived in 1996. Fashion Nugget rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts in the United States and fared equally well internationally, and spawned the top five alternative hit, “The Distance.”
Since that time, Cake has released the additional albums: Prolonging the Magic (1998), Comfort Eagle (2001), Pressure Chief (2004), and Showroom of Compassion, which rose to become the number one alternative album upon its release in 2011. Additional chart-topping singles include: “I Will Survive,” “Never There,” “Let Me Go,” “Sheep Go to Heaven,” “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” “No Phone,” and “Sick of You.”
Although Cake announced a new studio album in 2014, they instead released the live album Live from the Crystal Palace later in the same year. Cake – currently consisting of John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Gabe Nelson, Xan McCurdy, and Paulo Baldi – is currently working on the new material for their next album, expected within the coming year.
