The American rock supergroup known as Oysterhead was created in 2000 by founding members Stewart Copeland, Trey Anastasio, and Les Claypool. Although the band was originally intended as a one-off for a singular performance, the tremendous success and popularity of the show led to a more permanent establishment of Oysterhead.
Oysterhead released a debut album, The Grand Pecking Order, in 2001, and the album rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts. Oysterhead launched a North American tour to follow, including a performance of their first single, “Oz Is Ever Floating” on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. It seemed as though the band would continue to move forward, but the group took an unexpected hiatus following the 9/11 tragedy.
Oysterhead finally regrouped for a performance in 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, but has not released any additional material or engaged in any performances since then. All three members of the group continue to perform in their separate projects, however, and Oysterhead has not officially disbanded. It is expected that the group will resurface again, in the right place and the right time, for another performance.
