The American indie pop and neo soul band Fitz and the Tantrums was established in Los Angeles in 2008. Founding member Michael Fitzpatrick sought to establish his own band, and after contacting James King, a saxophonist whom he’d known in college, the duo recruited drummer John Wicks and Noelle Scaggs, who then brought bassist Joseph Karnes and keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna on board. With the group’s lineup established, Fitz and the Tantrums began preparing material for a debut show at the Hotel Café in Hollywood in late 2008.
Throughout 2009, Fitz and the Tantrums performed in and around the Los Angeles area, and later that year the group recorded a debut EP in a home spun studio. After the independent release, the band hit the road again, touring alongside notable acts such as Flogging Molly, Maroon 5, and Hepcat. In 2010, Fitz and the Tantrums released the debut album Pickin’ Up the Pieces, to critical acclaim; the success of the album resulted in a major record deal with Elektra Records.
Since that time, Fitz and the Tantrums has released the additional albums More Than Just a Dream (2013), and the self-titled Fitz and the Tantrums (2016.) Both albums rose into the top twenty on the mainstream charts in the United States and into the top ten on the alternative charts. Although the group had its first big hit with the single “MoneyGrabber,” Fitz and the Tantrums also scored a bigger hit in 2016 with the song “HandClap.” Other notable singles include: “Don’t Gotta Work It Out,” “Out of My League,” “Fools Gold” and the song “The Walker,” which was featured in the feature film Identity Thief and the television series Suits.
Currently, Fitz and the Tantrums is enjoying a rising level of success; the band recently launched a tour in support of OneRepublic in July of 2017.
