The American rock band Dr. Dog was established in West Grove, Pennsylvania shortly around the turn of the new millennium, by founding members Toby Leaman and Scott McKicken. The two musicians met in high school and began writing and performing together, and by 2002 they had self-released their first album, Toothbrush.
Toothbrush garnered the attention of Park the Van Records, which signed the group in 2004. In 2005, Dr. Dog released their debut, Easy Beat, followed by the album We All Belong in 2007. But it was the album Fate, upon its release in 2008, that became Dr. Dog’s big breakthrough, rising into the top twenty on the independent charts in the United States. Dr. Dog appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in support of the album, and then again on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
Fate led to a new record deal with ANTI-Records in 2009, followed by the albums Shame, Shame (2010), Be the Void (2012), B-Room (2013) and The Psychadelic Swamp (2016), featuring the songs “That Old Black Hole,” “Lonesome,” “The Truth,” and “Warrior Man.”
Dr. Dog continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Toby Leaman, Scott McMicken, Frank McElroy, Zach Miller, and Eric Slick. The band recently released their first live album, Live at a Flamingo Hotel, in 2015. Dr. Dog then surprised its fans with the album Abandoned Mansion, released in late 2016. The album was released with an announcement that proceeds for a period of time would benefit the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization which Dr. Dog supports.
