The actress and singer Amber Riley was born in 1986 in Los Angeles. Long before Amber rose to fame as the character of Mercedes Jones on the hit television series Glee, she studied drama and music at her local high school in La Mirada, California. An audition for American Idol when she was seventeen did not bring Riley to the show, but shortly thereafter she earned the role of Mercedes on Glee and spent the first four seasons appearing on the show as a regular.
On the show, Amber became known for her powerful vocals and her frequent solo performances, including renditions of such hits as “Respect,” “Bridge over Troubled Water,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “Beautiful.” For her talents, Amber Riley won a Screen Actors Guild Award and in 2012 she was chosen to sing the national anthem at the Democratic National Convention. Riley also competed on the show Dancing with the Stars, going on to become the first African American female to win the show .
Amber Riley left Glee in its fifth season but continues to reappear on the show as a guest. She is currently putting the finishing touches on her debut solo album, which features her debut single, “Colorblind,” released in the spring of 2014.
