Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk was born in 1968 in Carlsbad, California. Tony’s parents supported their son’s fascination with skateboarding when he was a child, in particular because it provided an outlet for his excessive energy. Because Tony devoted so much time to his skateboarding technique, by the time he was fourteen he’d risen to become a professional, the youngest in the sport at that time.
Hawk’s career as a competitor lasted throughout the 1990’s and into the new millennium. In 1999, he became the first skateboarder to successfully complete what is now known as the “900,” featuring two and a half mid-air rotations. Other highlights of his career include the foundation of the extreme sports exhibition Boom Boom HuckJam, the establishment of the Tony Hawk Foundation, and an induction to the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2009. Hawk is also the focus of the skateboarding video game series, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, which has eighteen titles in the series so far.
On the big screen, Tony Hawk has appeared either as himself or as other skateboarding characters in a number of movies, starting with the film Thrashin’ in 1986. Other notable appearances include: Gleaming the Cube (1989), xXx (2002), Deck Dogz (2006), Lords of Dogtown (2005), Parental Guidance (2012), Hell’s Kitchen (2013), and the Jackass series of movies. He has also appeared on television shows such as All That, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and What I Like About You.
Tony Hawk, now reaching into his 50’s, continues to skate occasionally. He recently performed his “final” 900 at the age of 48, in 2016. The feat was posted to the “Ride Channel” on YouTube.
