The actress known as Katey Sagal was born Catherine Louise Sagal in 1954 in Los Angeles, California. Before Katey rose to fame in her iconic role of Peg Bundy on the hit series Married… With Children, the actress grew up in a show business family, with three of her five siblings all pursuing careers in acting. Katey’s father was a film director who died tragically in an accident on set while shooting, but the Sagal family was highly influenced by his work and passion for the craft.
Katey began appearing in television roles almost immediately after her graduation from the California Institute of the Arts in the early 1970’s. Notable early appearances include roles in the television shows Columbo, Larry, and the Dream Makers, and a role in the 1987 film Maid to Order. Later that same year, Katey garnered the coveted role of Peg Bundy on Married… With Children, and she remained with the show for its full run, of ten years.
Following the end of Married… With Children, Katey Sagal began contributing her voice to a number of animated works, including the children’s cartoon Recess and the character of Leela in Futurama, a role she still continues to this day. She also appeared in a recurring role on That 70’s Show and 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, although the latter was cancelled after the untimely death of comedian and co-star John Ritter. Sagal is also an accomplished vocalist, having contributed background vocals to projects for a number of notable artists, including Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. She released in solo debut, Well… in 1994, and then a decade later the album Room (2004.)
For her work on Married… With Children, Katey Sagal has earned multiple award nominations, including Golden Awards for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy; Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series; and Critics’ Choice Television Awards. Sagal most recently joined the cast of Skons of Anarchy in the role of Gemma Teller Morrow, a performance for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2011. Katey can still be seen in this role today, and her voice can still be heard on Futurama, which now airs on the Cartoon Network.
