American MMA athlete and actress Ronda Rousey was born in 1987. Rousey is today best known as the first American female to win a bronze Olympic medal in judo, which she earned in 2008. However, long before her rise as an athlete, Ronda grew up in Riverside, California, inspired by her mother, who was the first American to win a World Judo Championship in the mid-1980s. A challenging birth led to Rousey’s childhood struggle with a speech impediment, and so as a young woman, she opted to earn her high school diploma through a GED exam instead of attending school for her last few years.
Ronda first qualified for the Olympics in 2004 at the young age of seventeen, becoming the youngest judoka in the games at that time. Between 2004 and 2008, Rousey’s achievements included a gold medal at the World Junior Judo Championships in 2004; a gold medal at the Birmingham World Cup in 2006: a bronze medal at two Junior World Championships in 2004; a silver medal at the World Judo Championships in 2007; and a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 2007. In 2008, she earned her first Olympic medal, a bronze, at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Ronda Rousey retired from judo competitions at the age of twenty-one. Today, she is recognized as one of the era’s most accomplished female athletes, with an ESPN poll in 2015 even tapping her as the Best Female Athlete Ever. As of 2017, she ranked in the top five female bantamweight fighters in the world. In addition to her career as an athlete, Ronda Rousey has also appeared in a number of films, most recently Fighter in the Sky (2016) and Mile 22 (2018.) Her autobiography, My Fight/Your Fight, was published in 2015.
