The Swedish professional ice hockey player Henrick Lundqvist was born in 1982 in Jamtland, an area of Sweden noted for its exceptional alpine skiing. Henrick and his brother decided instead to focus on ice hockey, playing from the time they were kindergarteners. Henrick quickly distinguished himself in the sport, eventually growing into one of his nation’s most promising players. His talents caught the attention of the New York Rangers, and Lundqvist joined the team in 2001 as their goaltender.
With the Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist has risen to become one of the era’s most notable hockey players. So far, Lundqvist is the only goaltender in the history of the sport to record thirty wins for seven straight seasons, beginning with his first. In 2006, Henrik played for the Swedish men’s team in the Winter Olympics, bringing the team to their second Olympic gold medal. In 2012, he earned his fortieth career shutout during a match against the Winnipeg Jets, and later that same year he was recognized with the Vezina Trophy.
Lundqvist is known for his philanthropic endeavors off the ice as well; in 2009, he became the spokesperson for the Dreams Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. Henrik and his wife have also founded the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation which seeks to provide health and education services to under-privileged families. For his charitable efforts, Lundqvist was a finalist for the ESPN Humanitarian of the Year Awards in 2015.
