The Canadian comedian and actor known as Tommy Chong was born in 1938 in Edmonton, Alberta. Young Tommy grew up in Calgary, but struggled in school as a teenager. Eventually, he dropped out to set his sights on a career in entertainment, learning to play the guitar and joining a local band. Tommy played with a variety of bands throughout the late 1960’s, until he met up with Cheech Marin and forged the life-long friendship which would bring the would the comedic duo of Cheech & Chong.
Cheech & Chong dominated the 1970’s and 1980’s comedy scene, appearing in a number of films, including: Up in Smoke (1978), Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie (1980), Nice Dreams (1981), Still Smokin’ (1983), and Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers (1984.) The duo had a number of award-winning comedy albums and their sold-out stand-up performances were well-known. Cheech & Chong split in the mid 1980’s, however, and while Cheech Marin went on to an acting career, Tommy Chong remained quiet for a number of years. He did appear in a number of television shows in guest roles, including: Dharma & Greg, The Simpsons, Raising Hope, and – most recently - The Millers.
Tommy Chong also resurfaced as the subject of a documentary, a/k/a Tommy Chong, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also appeared with Cheech Marin in a South Park episode, and the duo began touring together in 2008. Most recently, Tommy Chong competed on the 19th season of the competitive series, Dancing with the Stars. Although he didn’t make it to the end, he went on to become the oldest contestant to make it to the show’s semi-finals.
