The American actor Danny Aiello was born in New York in 1933. His parents had emigrated from the Italy and settled in Manhattan before Danny was born, but separated when Danny was still quite young. At the age of sixteen, Danny entered the army and served for three years, but after returning to New York City he began to pursue a career as an actor.
Aiello’s early break was in the early 1970’s, first in a small role in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), followed by another small role in The Godfather Part II (1974.) Danny’s big breakthrough came with the film Defiance in 1980, and then his role in Fort Apache, the Bronx (1981) brought him alongside Paul Newman and led to critical acclaim for his performance.
Since that time, Danny Aiello has appeared in dozens of highly successful films in major roles, including: Once Upon a Time in America, Dinner Rush, Hudson Hawk, Ruby, Two Days in the Valley, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Do the Right Thing, and Moonstruck. In many of these roles, Aiello has been featuring singing, leading to his release of the albums: I Just Wanted to Hear the Words (2004), Live from Atlantic City (2008), and Bridges (2011.)
In addition to his roles in film, Danny Aiello has a number of theater credits from the Broadway films: Gemini, the Floating Light Bulb, Hurlyburly, The House of Blue Leaves, and Wheelbarrow Closers. He most recently appeared on stage in The Shoemaker, in 2011.
