Sam Jay is an American comedy writer and performer born in 1982. She was born and raised in Boston and worked seven jobs in major cities before deciding to pursue a career in comedy in 2012. Jay would garner a loyal fan base for her self-aware jokes and perspective, and she eventually moved to New York City where she pursued a job for Saturday Night Live.
In late 2017, Sam Jay would land a job as a writer for the show and created the sketch series "Black Jeopardy." The following year she would branch out and continue doing stand-up shows, appearing on multiple television shows for her material. Sam Jay would also perform at multiple festivals such as the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival and make appearances on late-night talk shows as she established herself outside of writing.
Sam Jay has been featured on several television networks including NBC, ABC, Comedy Central, and HBO. She has appeared on The Comedy Lineup on Netflix and Jimmy Kimmel Live! During her career, and amassed hundreds of thousands of views on her online content. Sam Jay has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2018 and 2019, both for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for SNL.
Sam Jay recently released her debut stand-up special on Netflix entitled Sam Jay: 3 in the Morning and is set to produce a series for HBO in 2021.
