The African American singer known as Archie Bell was born in 1994 in Henderson, Texas. As a child, Bell began singing in various clubs in the Houston area and formed his first group, the Drells, while he was still in high school in the mid 1960’s. The band signed with Philadelphia International Records in 1968 and burst onto the music scene with their debut album, Tighten Up, which spawned one of the group’s biggest hits with the title track.
Between 1968 and 1982, Archie Bell & the Drells released seven additional albums, including the R&B top forty hits: I Can’t Stop Dancing (1969), Dance Your Troubles Away (1975), Where Will You Go When the Party’s Over (1977),
And Strategy (1979.) Additional hits from the albums include: “I Can’t Stop Dancing,” “Girl You’re Too Young,” “Soul City Walk,” “Everybody Have a Good Time,” and “Don’t Let Love Get You Down.”
The Drells dissolved in 1980, at which time Archie Bell launched his own career. Bell released his solo debut, I Never Had It So Good, in 1981. Since that time, Bell has continued to perform both as a solo act and also on occasion with previous members of the Drells.
