The doo-wop group known as Little Anthony and the Imperials was established in the 1950’s when members from the groups the Chesters and the Duponts merged to create a new group. Following the release of their smash-hit single, "Tears on My Pillow," in 1958, the group released We Are the Imperials in the following year and secured their position as one of the most iconic groups of the era.
Little Anthony and the Imperials enjoyed hits all the way to the late 1970’s, many of them placing in the top forty on both the R&B and mainstream charts, including: "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop/I’m Still in Love With You," "I’m on the Outside (Looking In)," "Goin’ Out of My Head/Make it Easy On Yourself," "Hurt So Bad/Reputation," and "Take Me Back/Our Song." Little Anthony and the Imperials continued to perform throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, but experienced frequent periods of hiatus and eventually dissolved through gradual inactivity.
Little Anthony and the Imperials officially reemerged in 1992 with a performance at the 40th anniversary celebration of Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. Additional performances followed, including a PBS special, a performance on the Today show, and a live album release (Little Anthony & the Imperials – Live: Up Close & Personal.) A release of a new LP, You’ll Never Know, followed in 2008, promoted through performances on such programs as Late Show with David Letterman.
Since then, Little Anthony and the Imperials have continued to tour together with some changes to the lineup, and samples form their classic "Can You Imagine" have been featured in Daft Punk’s recent song "Crescendolls." The group remains as one of the most significant of the doo-wop era, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
