The American soul and funk band Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band was established in the early 60’s by Charles Wright. Wright was born in 1940 in Mississippi, but as a teenager he moved to Los Angeles, where he began to pursue a career as a musician. Wright founded his first band, Charles Wright & the Wright Sounds, in 1962; over the years with multiple additions to the lineup, the group eventually became Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.
Between 1967 and 1973, Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band scored a number of charting R&B and pop hits, including: “Do Your Thing,” “Love Land,” “Till You Get Enough,” and their biggest and most enduring hit, “Express Yourself.” The song has been sampled by multiple contemporary artists and has also appeared in dozens of films, including Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Remember the Titans.
Although Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band disbanded in the 1970’s, the group members do still reunited from time to time for performances. Charles Wright has also gone on to enjoy a solo career, releasing a number of albums in the 1970’s. He recently released his fifth album, Finally Got It Wright, in 2007.
