Sam Moore was born in 1935 and grew up to become one of America’s most iconic soul and rhythm & blues singers. As the tenor for Sam & Dave from 1961 to 1981, Sam Moore was part of the duo which is considered the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful in soul music history. With Sam & Dave and as a solo artist, Sam Moore has spawned the iconic hits “Hold On I’m Coming,” “I Thank You,” “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” “Soul Sister,” “Brown Sugar,” “Wrap It Up” and “Soul Man,” to name a few.
Today, Sam Moore continues to record and perform, long since Sam & Dave disbanded decades ago. Moore has appeared on innumerous television shows and in dozens of films, including The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Blues Brothers 2000, One Trick Pony, and Tapeheads. As a recording artist, Sam Moore has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Phil Collins, and James Taylor. Sam Moore’s solo album, Overnight Sensational (2006), also features contributions from the likes of Mariah Carey, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting. The single “You Are So Beautiful,” featuring Eric Clapton and Billy Preston, earned a Grammy nomination, and in 2008, Moore released Sam & Dave: The Original Soul Men, a DVD of their performances going all the way back to the 1960’s.
Sam Moore has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone has recognized him as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of the Rock Era, and Moore has been the recipient of both an ETAM Living Legend Award and Pioneer Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. He continues to perform and record.
