Otis Day and the Knights began under the most unusual circumstances; the band was created specifically to perform in the 1978 film Animal House. Years later, the band has made the journey from fiction to fact, embarking on a real-life music career following the remarkable success of the film and their performance.
Otis Day and the Knights performed the song “Shout,” originally written by the Isley Brothers, during a party scene in the film. When casting began for Animal House, DeWayne Jessie, one of Universal Studios talented character actors, was offered the role of the lead singer, Otis Day. The scene is among the most memorable in classic film – a fraternity house toga party – and the band’s performance as a part of the scene goes down in history as among the most iconic in American cinema.
DeWayne Jessie was startled when, after filming wrapped and the movie was released, he received a call from a music producer who wanted to take Otis Day and the Knights on the road as an actual band. They immediately began performing for sell-out crowds, finishing more than two hundred and fifty dates within the first year. Otis Day and the Knights even released an album, and decades later the band continues to tour and perform, much to the delight of Animal House fans everywhere.
