Marvin Louis Sapp was born in 1967 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He grew up singing with a variety of Gospel groups before he joined Commissioned in 1991 at the invitation of Fred Hammond. Sapp contributed vocals to the band’s albums Number 7, Matters of the Heart, and Irreplaceable Love, and remained with the group until they dissolved in 1995.
After leaving Commissioned, Marvin Sapp embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album, Marvin Sapp, in 1996. Marvin Sapp’s next album, Nothing Else Matters, was released in 1997, and between the two he scored hits with the singles "Calling Me" and "In His Presence." Sapp took a short hiatus following the release of Nothing Else Matters, but returned in 2002 with the album WOW, featuring the song “I Believe.” The album I Believe followed later in that year, and then Diary of a Psalmist (2003), Be Exalted (2005), and Thirsty (2007), offering audiences the singles “Changed,” “Perfect Peace,” “Never Would Have Made It,” and “Praise Him in Advance.”
The album Here I Am was released in 2010, earning Marvin Sapp the achievement of the highest debuting gospel album to hit the charts in more than fifty years. The album’s single, “The Best In Me,” hit number one on the gospel charts, number fourteen on the R&B charts, and number twenty on the urban contemporary charts. “My Testimony,” which followed, also hit number one on the gospel charts.
Marvin Sapp has been recognized with the BET Awards for Best Gospel Artist in both 2008 and 2010. In addition to serving as the administrative pastor of Grand Rapid’s Lighthouse Full Life Center Church, Marvin Sapp continues to record and perform, inspiring others through his remarkable voice and beautiful music.
