The Isley Brothers, originally a gospel quartet, were founded by Ron, Rudy, Kelly, and Vernon Isley in the late 1950’s. After the passing of Vernon, the remaining trio experienced their first single with the song “Shout,” in 1959, and then followed up in the 1960’s with the hits “Twist and Shout” and “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You.)” The Isley Brother’s biggest hit came in 1969, however, with the Grammy winner “It’s Your Thing,” and shortly thereafter brothers Ernie, Marvin and Chris were added to the group.
Between 1973 and 1983, the Isley Brothers released a string of hit albums and singles, crossing over from the R&B charts to the mainstream and pop, thanks to their skillful blend of rock, soul, and funk. Songs like “Love the One You’re With,” “Spill the Wine,” “Who’s That Lady,” "The Pride,” "Take Me to the Next Phase, Pt. 1," "I Wanna Be With You, Pt. 1," and "Don't Say Goodnight” brought the Isley’s to the top of the charts, until in the late 1980’s, when the Isley Brothers temporarily disbanded. They reunited in 1990, however, and released Mission to Please in 1996. Additional albums followed in the new millennium, including Eternal (2001), Body Kiss (2003), Baby Makin' Music (2006), and I’ll Be Home for Christmas (2007.)
Despite the loss of Marvin in 2010, brothers Ron and Ernie have remained together as a duo, and continue to move forward as the Isley Brothers. The Isley Brothers have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and they are the recipients of the R&B Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
