The singer and songwriter known as Brenton Wood was born Alfred Jesse Smith in 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana. As a child, Brenton’s family moved to Los Angeles and it was while attending college in California that Brenton fell in love with music and began to take the potential pursuit of a career as a musician seriously. Wood adopted the moniker by which he would become known, and he began composing and studying piano.
Brenton Wood’s earliest endeavors didn’t make it to the charts, but he signed with Double Shot Records and eventually had a hit with the song “The Oogum Boogum Song,” which rose into the top forty on the mainstream charts. The hit was followed by an even bigger hit, “Gimme Little Sign,” which rose to the top of all the charts both in the United States and internationally. Brenton Wood went on to release the successful albums: Gimme Little Sign (1967), Oogum Boogum (1967), Come Softly (1977), The Love Is for Real (2001), and Lord Hear My Prayer (2009.)
Although Wood never duplicated his earliest smash hits, he continued to perform and record well into the new millennium, and his songs have been featured in a number of films. “Oogum Boogum Song” has been included in the films and shows: Colors (1988), Beverly Hills, 90210 (1992), Almost Famous (2000), Shopgirl (2005), Treme (2012), and Devil’s Due (2014.) “Gimme Little Sign” was also covered by Ricky Nelson during his career heyday.
