Barbara Corcoran Biography

American businesswoman and television personality Barbara Corcoran was born in 1949 in Edgewater, New Jersey. Corcoran has in recent years risen to prominence for her role as one of the investor “sharks” on ABC’s reality series, Shark Tank, but long before her recent success as a media personality, Barbara initially harbored dreams of becoming a teacher.

After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1971 with her degree in Education, Corcoran taught for about a year, while working various side jobs to help make ends meet. In 1973, Barbara decided to try her hand in real-estate, and so she took a modest $1,000 loan and used it to launch The Corcoran Group. The rest, as they say, is history – within five years, the company was worth millions and Corcoran was among the most successful real estate moguls in New York. In 2001, The Corcoran Group was sold to NRT Incorporated for a staggering sixty-six million dollars.

Since that time, Barbara Corcoran has served as a columnist for Redbook, the Daily Review, the New York Daily News, and More Magazine, and she has authored multiple books, including “If You Don’t Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons On Your Pigtails: and Other Lessons I Learned From My Mom” (2003); “Nextville: Amazing Places to Live Your Life (2008); and Shark Tales; How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business (2011.)

Today, Barbara Corcoran continues to appear on Shark Tank, and also serves as a contributor for the Today Show. Corcoran also appears on her own CNBC show, The Millionaire Broker with Barbara Corcoran, and writes a weekly colum for the New York Daily News.
