American football legend Mike Ditka, known as “Iron Mike,” was born Michael Dyczko in 1939 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. Mike’s father was a welder in the steel manufacturing industry and encouraged his young son to pursue a college education to ensure that his prospects in life would be strong. While in high school, Ditka excelled in a number of sports but stood out for his talents on the football field. With initial aspirations to become a dentist, Mike Ditka accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, entering in 1958. Although his scholarship was for football, he also played basketball and baseball. His college career was cut short when the Chicago Bears drafted him in 1961, changing his life forever.
With the Bears, Mike Dikta brought the team to new heights of achievement while at the same time standing out on his own as a player. After earning the Rookie of the Year award, Ditka went on to play with the team for five more seasons before moving on to play with the Philadelphia Eagles and then the Dallas Cowboys, rising to become a three-time Super Bowl champion. Upon retiring, Ditka spent three years as assistant coach to the Cowboys, then eleven years as coach for the Bears, earning the NFL Coach of the Year award twice. After the Bears, Ditka went on to coach the New Orleans Saints for three more years. Ultimately, while Ditka was a celebrated player on the field, he grew to become even more celebrated as a coach.
Mike Ditka became an analyst and commentator for NBC’s NFL Live in 1992. He has also served as a commentator and studio analyst for; ESPN, appearing on the networks’ Sunday NFL Countdown and NFL Live; CBS, appearing on Monday Night Football; and CBS Sports, appearing on The NFL Today. His work as a commentator and his coaching history earned him the knick name “ America’s Coach,” although his public appearances include many outside of the sport. Ditka has also appeared in cameo roles in 3rd Rock from the Sun and L.A. Law, and he appeared in the Will Ferrell film Kicking & Screaming as himself.
Most recently, Mike Ditka launched his own hospitality company, Mike Ditka Resorts, starting with two sites in the Orlando, Florida area. Ditka also owns a chain of restaurants with locations in Pittsburgh, Phoenix, and Chicago.
