The American television personality and fashion consultant Tim Gunn was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. Gunn’s father was an FBI agent, and the household rather strict. Tim, who from a young age identified as gay, grew up in a household he feared would not be supportive of his orientation, and so he kept his sexuality private until he was nearly thirty years old.
Today, Tim Gunn is best known as one of the era’s most recognizable fashion designers, and for his work on the reality series Project Runway, but his career actually began as a member of the faculty at Parsons The New School of Design. After leaving the school in 2007, Gunn served as chief creative officer for the Liz Claiborne label, but by this time he’d started to appear on the reality competition Project Runway, coining the show’s key catchphrase, “make it work.” For his work on the show, Gunn was recognized with a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program. In 2007, the Bravo channel also launched Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.
In his fifteen years on various television programs, Tim Gunn has served as mentor to dozens of budding fashion designers, a role he continues to fulfill through television appearances and multiple books. Gunn has appeared in guest starring roles on such television shows as Ugly Betty, Drop Dead Diva, How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, and Project Runway: Junior, for which he also serves as executive producer. Gunn has also authored the best-selling books: Shaken, Not Stirred (2011), Tim Gunn’s Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History of Everything in Your Closet (2012), and Tim Gunn: The Natty Professor: A Master Class on Mentoring, Motivating, and Making It Work!
