The American basketball player Walt Frazier was born in 1945 in Atlanta. As a young man, Walt excelled at athletics, although the segregation of Georgia in the 1950’s made it difficult for him to find a facility in which to practice basketball. His love of the sport led to his acceptance of a scholarship from Southern Illinois University and he quickly rose to become one of the strongest collegiate players in the country.
While in college, Frazier led the university to the NCAA Division II Tournament and he was named a Division II All-American two years in a row. Southern Illinois University won the National Invitation Tournament in 1967, with Walt being name Most Valuable Player of the tournament. His success on the court while in college led to an offer from the New York Knicks in 1967, where he rose to tremendous success, seeing the Knicks to NBA Championships in 1970 and 1973. Over the course of his career, Walt Frazier was named NBA All-Star seven times, All-Defensive First Team seven times, and All-NBA First Team four times. Walt was known for establishing numerous franchise records (for points, assists, field goals made, field goals attempted, minutes played, and most games), as well as for his artistic plays on the court, most notably for stealing the ball. Following his retirement from the NBA, Walt Frazier moved on to a number of other endeavors.
Currently, Walt Frazier serves as a commentator on the MSG Network, and he owns and operates the New York City restaurant Clyde Frazier’s Wine and Dine. Walt was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.
