Liev Shreiber was born in 1967 in San Francisco, California. Although young Live grew up in an intellectually stimulating environment, his early childhood was also rather tumultuous, with family unrest and upheaval which led to heated custody battles and frequent moves. Eventually, he settled with his mother in New York City, although the family lived in abject poverty for a number of years and he was frequently sent to live in a variety of bohemian-style ashrams and communes around the east coast.
After entering the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Liev’s growing interest in theater became more serious, and he began training for the stage. After appearing in a number of performances and earning his Masters from Yale’s School of Drama, he accepted a number of small and independent roles until landing the role of Cotton Weary in the first installment of the Scream film franchise. The role led to another key one for Live; that of young Orson Welles in RKO 281, which earned him a Golden Globe and Emmy, launching a career that has now spanned well into the new millennium. Notable roles so far in Shreiber’s career include ones the films: Phantoms (1998), Twilight (1998), A Walk on the Moon (1999), Jakob the Liar (1999), Hamlet (2000), Kate & Leopold (2001), The Sum of All Fears (2002), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Omen (2006), Defiance (2008), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Taking Woodstock (2009), Salt (2010), The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), and The Butler (2013.)
In addition to film, Liev Schreiber is a classically trained actor with an impressive stage resume as well, appearing in critically acclaimed roles in Cymbeline (1998), Hamlet (1999), Henry V (2003), and Macbeth (2006.) He recently earned a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor for his role in A View from a Bridge, in 2010. Schreiber’s voice can also be heard as narrator on a number educational network series and award-winning documentaries, most recently in the film Money for Nothing (2013.)
