Filmmaker, conservationist, and “aquanaut” Fabien Cousteau was born in 1967 in France. As the grandson of world renowned explorer and conservationist Jacques- Yves Cousteau, it was little surprise that Fabien would find himself drawn to the ocean. In fact, some of his earliest memories are of joining his grandfather on his ship Calypso, and he learned to scuba dive while he was still in elementary school.
By the time he was twelve, Fabien had officially joined his father’s crew, maintaining the boat and assisting divers in their expeditions. After graduating from Boston University with a B.A. in Environmental Economics, Cousteau began work for a number of organizations, including National Graphic, until he launched his first expedition to the Bahamas in 2002 to film his interaction with sharks. His talents as a filmmaker quickly became evident, and from there he went on to produce the documentary Mind of a Demon for the CBS network.
Since that time, Fabien Cousteau has produced the PBS multi-hour series Ocean Adventures, largely inspired by his grandfather’s similar series of the same name from the 1970’s. In 2009, Cousteau began his work to salvage and restore water ecosystems throughout the world; he has continued this work today through his non-profit foundation, the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center, which was established in 2016.
In 2002, Fabien Cousteau was tapped by People Magazine as the world’s “sexiest explorer.”
