The rock group Steppenwolf was formed in 1963, founded by John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, Rushton Moreve, and Goldy McJohn. Originally called The Sparrows, the band rose to international prominence after their third single, “Born to Be Wild,” was featured in the 1969 film Easy Rider. The song rose to gold status, selling more than a million copies, and rising to the number two spot on the mainstream billboard charts.
Following their breakthrough, and throughout much of the late 1960’s and 1970’s, Steppenwolf provided audiences with classic albums and singles such as: Steppenwolf (1968), At your Birthday Party (1969), For Ladies Only (1971), “Rock Me,” “Monster,” and “Magic Carpet Ride.” During the brief Steppenwolf hiatus in the early 1970’s, John Kay launched a solo career, releasing Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heros and My Sportin’ Life, to critical acclaim.
But Steppenwolf reunited and the band released Slow Flux, which spawned the hit single “Straight Shootin’ Woman.” They followed up with Hour of the Wolf and Skullduggery, before once again disbanding in 1976. John Kay once again embarked on a solo career and released All in Good Time in 1978. In 1980, after establishing an entirely new lineup due to legal disputes, John Kay recreated Steppenwolf as John Kay and Steppenwolf, and began a whole new phase for the band. The timing was unique, bringing Steppenwolf to an entirely new generation while still drawing from the band’s loyal fans, and they have enjoyed steady success every since.
John Kay and Steppenwolf continue to tour regularly, having released seven albums thus far. They also host the annual music festival Wolf Fest in Tennessee. So far in the band’s history, Steppenwolf has record sales topping twenty-five million, and their music has been featured in more than fifty films and television programs. The band continues to tour and perform regularly and shows no signs of slowing down. The group recently wrapped an extensive tour which ran through the latter part of 2017.
