The American R&B artist known as Joe was born Joseph Lewis Thomas in 1973 in Columbus, Georgia. Joe grew up in Alabama, and by the time he was a teenager he knew that he wished to pursue a career as a musician. After graduating from high school, Joe worked a number of odd jobs but continued to write music and practice his signing.
In his early twenties, Joe moved to New Jersey. Eventually, his talents caught the attention of producer Vincent Herbert, who gave Joe the support he needed to record his first demo tape. The demo garnered the interest of Mercury Records and so after signing with the label Joe entered the studio to prepare for his debut album.
Everything, Joe’s debut, arrived in 1992 and was only moderately successful. But Joe was not deterred; after switching to Jive Records in 1997, Joe again entered the studio to record his sophomore effort, this time bringing him the attention he deserved.
All That I Am arrived in 1997 and proved to be the breakthrough album for Joe, climbing into the top five on the R&B charts and into the top twenty on the mainstream charts. The album spawned the hit “Don’t Wanna Be a Player,” which was featured on the soundtrack for the film Booty Call, in addition to the singles “The Love Scene,” “Good Girls,” “No One Else Comes Close,” and “All That I Am.” The album eventually reached platinum status and set the stage for the highly successful follow-up album, My Name Is Joe, in addition to a collaboration with Mariah Carey for her number one hit, “Thank God I Found You.” During this time Joe also earned multiple award nominations, including a BET Award nomination for Best R&B Male Artist, and four Grammy nominations, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance (for “I Wanna Know”), Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals (for “Thank God I Found You”), Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Best R&B Album, for My Name IS joe.
Since that time, Joe has released multiple successful albums, including: My Name is Joe (2000), Better Days (2001), And Then… (2003), Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me (2007), Joe Thomas, New Man (2008), Signature (2009), and The Good, The Bad, the Sexy (2011.) The albums have spawned the additional chart-topping hits, “I Wanna Know,” “Stutter,” “More & More,” “Ride wit U,” and “Where You At.”
Joe continues to perform and record. He most recently signed with BMG Rights Management and released his latest studio album, Bridges, in 2014. The album debuted in the top twenty on the mainstream charts, and features the duet “Sex Pt. 2,” recorded as a duet with Kelly Rowland.
