The Whispers were created in Watts, California in 1964, when brothers Walter and Wallace Scott joined up with Marcus Hutson, Gordy Harmon, and Nicholas Caldwell. The men formed a local singing group and began performing in local night clubs and on street corners throughout the Los Angeles area. Between 1964 and 1967, the Whispers recorded a number of songs and slowly established a strong following in the Bay Area.
In 1969, the Whispers released the song “The Time Will Come,” to moderate success, and then in the year following they received further attention with “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong,” which shot to the top of the charts, giving them their first R&B hit and bringing them nationwide recognition. Despite some changes to the lineup, for the remainder of the decade and beyond, the Whispers racked up hit after hit and released one gold album after another, including: One For The Money, Open Up Your Love, Headlights, The Whispers, Just Gets Better with Time, "(Let's Go) All the Way," "( Olivia) Lost and Turned Out,” "A Song For Donny," "And The Beat Goes On,” "Lady," and "Rock Steady.”
When the Whispers lost Marcus in 2000, after he succumbed to ill health, they moved forward despite a determination to not ever replace him. The Whispers continue to perform in the new millennium, with the lineup of Walter Scott, Wallace Scott, Nicholas Caldwell, and Leaveil Degree. The group’s active performance schedule includes regular sell-out shows in Vegas and plenty of charitable work for organizations they support, such as the Police Athletic League Reading Program.
The Whispers were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003, and in 2005, they received the Governors Award from the San Francisco Chapter of the Grammy Awards.
