Sammy Hagar's career launched him to true stardom after joining Van Halen in 1985, but he'd been active in the music scene for more than a decade prior. After giving up a boxing career, Sammy Hagar turned to music in the 1960's, singing with a variety of bands.
He built a solid following in the California hard rock scene, and so when the opportunity to join Montrose came, in 1973, Sammy Hagar joined the band. Two albums later, he left the band to pursue a solo career.
He released a few successful solo albums, including 1981's Standing Hampton and 1982's Three Lock Box with the single "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy." In 1984 he scored a hit single with "I Can't Drive 55," and the year following, he replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen, and remained with the band throughout the 1980's and into the 1990's.
With Van Halen, Sammy Hagar scored four multi-platinum albums: OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), Live: Right Here, Right Now (1993), and Balance (1995.) But in the following year, Sammy Hagar left Van Halen to much media gossip and scrutiny. Van Halen replaced him with Gary Cherone, and the reasons behind the split were never fully revealed.
But the sensation behind the incident helped Sammy Hagar's 1997 Marching to Mars sell surprisingly well, re-establishing Sammy Hagar as a solo act. His success continued into the new millennium, with Not 4 Sale, Live: Hellelujah, and Livin' It Up! In 2008, Sammy Hagar joined with Chad Smith, Michael Anthony, and Joe Satriani to form Chickenfoot, and their self-titled debut album was released in 2009. The band followed with Chickenfoot III in 2011.
Sammy Hagar continues to write, record, perform, and tour.
