Established in 1987, the pop group No Doubt began when Gwen Stefani and her brother Eric joined forces with John Spence to create a ska band. With the inclusion of Tony Kanal on bass, No Doubt started playing around the Anaheim area and established a local following. After John Spence tragically committed suicide in December of 1987, Gwen became No Doubt’s vocalist and they added Adrian Young and Tom Dumont on drums and guitar, and forged forward.
A deal with Interscope Records came in 1991, and No Doubt released their debut in 1993. Beacon Street Collection was followed by Tragic Kingdom in 1995. The latter rose into the Top Ten, due in part to the strength of singles such as “Spiderwebs” and “Just a Girl.” “Don’t Speak” was the biggest hit off the album, and one of No Doubt’s biggest hits to date. Return of Saturn followed in 2000, with the singles “Simple Kind of Life,” “Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Bathwater.” No Doubt followed up in 2001 with Rock Steady, which was more successful than Return of Saturn, producing the Grammy-winning songs “Underneath It All” and “Hey Baby.” Other singles off the album include “Running” and “Hella Good.”
Following a tour with Blink 182 in 2004, No Doubt opted for a hiatus. Gwen Stefani began work on some solo projects and became a mother, and Tom Dumont also released his own solo project. Adrian Young contributed to Bow Wow Wow’s 2004 tour and some of the tracks on Here’s to the Mourning, by Unwritten Law. Tony Kanal also contributed to Pink’s Funhouse. The group returned in 2009 with a summer tour, in part to support their upcoming new album release. Another compilation album, Icon, was released in the meantime, and then finally No Doubt’s long-awaited next album, Push and Shove, was released in 2012.
No Doubt continues to write, record, and perform. Recent years have seen the group performing at the Global Citizen Earth Day Concert, at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass, Rock In Rio USA, and Riot Fest and Carnival in Chicago.
