Charles “Chuck” Negron was born in 1942 in Manhattan. He grew up singing in local doo-wop groups around the Bronx, and perfected his skills at basketball, which led to college recruitments. His college years took him out to California, where he met up with Cory Wells, Chuck Negron, and Danny Hutton in 1968. The members originally began a band under the name Redwood, but after adding additional musicians – Jimmy Greenspoon, Floyd Sneed, Joe Schermie, and Michael Allsup – they changed their name to Three Dog Night and went on to become one of the most successful American bands of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
Three Dog Night spawned eighteen top twenty songs, including number one hits such as "Joy to the World," "Mama Told Me Not to Come," and "Black and White." The band lasted until 1977, at which time Chuck Negron had developed a life-threatening drug habit. He spend the next twenty years rotating in and out of various rehab clinics before finally finding one that worked for him. The Cri-Help center restored Negron to health and he left his treatment ready to embark on a solo career. Chuck Negron released three albums: Am I Still In Your Heart (1995), Joy to the World (1996), and Long Road Back (1999.) He published Three Dog Nightmare, his autobiography, in 1999, which tells the honest tale of his fall into the depths of drug addiction and his recovery.
Chuck Negron continues to perform and entertain, but he also works extensively with a variety of organizations such as MusiCares, Cri-Help, and the Musicians Assistance Program, all of which seek to help those suffering from addiction. The third edition of his autobiography was released in 2013, and he continues to lecture publicly about his experiences. Recent appearances have also included performances; he recently appeared at one such event in Los Angeles in October of 2017.
