The Guess Who came together in Winnipeg, formed by singer/guitarist Chad Allan. The initial lineup included Allan, Bob Ashley, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, and Jim Kale.
Their first hit was a rendition of "Shakin' All Over." The single reached number one in Canada but only number twenty-two in the United States.
Already far more successful in their own home country during the 1960's and 1970's, the Guess Who finally broke into the American market with the 1970 hit "American Woman." The album of the same name became their first gold album and also their first Top Ten in the United States.
"Share the Land" followed off their next album, and other singles made the charts afterward, including "Clap for the Wolfman," off the same album. The band broke up in 1975.
In 2001, the Guess Who was recognized with honorary doctorate degrees from Brandon University in Manitoba. The Guess Who was also inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame that same year.
In 2003, the Guess Who performed at the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto SARS Benefit Concert. In 2004, they embarked on a highly successful sixty-date North American tour. In 2011, the Guess Who returned to the studio to record new songs. They continue with live performances and the new singles are part of their regular set lists, in addition to being available as streaming audio on the Guess Who's websites.
