Musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd was born June 12, 1977, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Kenny received his first guitar when he was only a few years old, and began playing seriously by the time he was seven. A meeting with Stevie Ray Vaughan inspired Kenny Wayne Shepherd to seriously consider a career in music, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already proficient. Another lucky encounter, at the age of thirteen, brought Kenny Wayne Shepherd on stage with bluesman Bryan Lee, and the success of that performance led to Kenny’s first demo tapes.
A video was shot at Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s first performance, at the Red River Revel Arts Festival, and it was his stage presence that impressed Irving Azoff of Giant Records enough to sign him. Kenny’s debut album, Ledbetter Heights, was released in 1995, and within a year’s time, it had sold a half million copies, an unheard of number for a blues record, especially one recorded by someone so young. From that point on, Kenny Wayne Shepherd rocketed to success, with a string of albums, all of which hit the number one spot on the Blues charts: Trouble Is… (1997), Live On (1999), The Place You’re In (2004), 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads (2007), and How I Go (2011.)
The albums spawned multiple singles which hit the Top Ten: “Deja Voodoo” (1995), “Slow Ride” (1997), “Somehow, Somewhere, Someway” (1998), “Blue on Black” (1998), “In 2 Deep” (1999), “Was” (2000.) In the new millennium, Kenny Wayne Shepherd had his own signature guitar issued by Fender, and was nominated for a Grammy for Live In Chicago. In 2011, he released How I Go On, his seventh CD, and then in 2014, the album Goin’ Home arrived.
Thus far in his career, Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been nominated for five Grammys and earned two Billboard Awards and two Blues Music Awards. Shepherd continues to write, tour, and perform, and he’s just getting started. His latest album, Lay It On Down, arrived in the summer of 2017 and rose to the number one spot on the music charts. The album features the single “You Can’t Judge a Book By the Cover.”
