Grand Funk Railroad is comprised of current members Mel Schacher, Don Brewer, Max Carl, Bruce Kulick, and Tim Cashion. Grand Funk is recognized as having established the musical foundations for bands such as Bon Jovi, Foreigner, and Journey, and since the band’s inception, Grand Funk Railroad has continued to tour regularly and draw consistent crowds from its fan base.
Grand Funk Railroad was formed when Brewer, Mark Farner, and Mel Schacher came together in 1969. After performing at the Atlanta Pop Festival, Grand Funk captured the attention of Capital Records and released its debut, On Time, to great success; the album went gold almost immediately, selling more than one million copies. A string of hit albums followed: Closer to Home (1970), Survival (1971), E Pluribus Funk (1971), Phoenix (1972), We’re an American Band (1973), Shinin’ On (1974), All the Girls in the World Beware!!! (1974), Born to Die (1976), Grand Funk Lives (1981), and What’s Funk (1983), featuring hit singles such as “We’re An American Band,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and “Bad Time.”
Grand Funk Railroad disbanded in the early 1980’s, but reunited in 1966 with three of its original members performing three sold-out shows in 1997. In the new millennium, Grand Funk recruited Carl, Kulick, and Cashion to join Brewer and Schacher, and now, four decades later, Grand Funk Railroad continues to receive continuous airplay and has the distinction of eight Top 40 hits, two number one singles, and sales exceeding twenty-five million copies worldwide. With ten platinum records and thirteen gold records, Grand Funk Railroad performs approximately forty shows every year, and shows no signs of slowing down.
