The Scottish funk band Average White Band (AWB) was formed in 1972 by musicians Malcolm Duncan, Alan Gorrie, Onnie McIntyre, Roger Ball, Hamish Stuart, and Robbie McIntosh. After a performance as part of Eric Clapton’s 1973 concert, Average White Band released their debut, Show Your Hand. While the album did not fare well commercially, it caught the attention of Clapton’s tour manager, who offered to manage them.
With the assistance of producer Arif Martin, Average White Band released their next album, AWB, which was received with astonishing success. It climbed to number one on the charts in the United States. The single “Pick Up the Pieces” also hit number one on the charts and reached gold status. Cut the Cake followed in 1975, and then Soul Searching in 1976, both highly successful. But by the 1980’s, Average White Band’s popularity was dissipating, and the band members called it quits in 1982.
Average White Band resurfaced in the mid 1990’s and released Soul Tattoo (1997) and Face to Face (1999.) Today, although Gorrie and McIntyre are the only original members of the group remaining, AWB continues to perform and record with the current lineup of Gorrie, McIntyre, Fred Vigdor, Cliff Lyons, Rocky Bryant, Brent Carter, and Rob Aries.
