The choral rock group The Polyphonic Spree was established in 2000 in Texas, by founding member Tim DeLaughter. DeLaughter had been a member of the group Tripping Daisy, until the untimely death of the group’s guitarist in 1999. Tim developed The Polyphonic Spree immediately after, and he immediately set out to bring a dozen other musicians on board to create the unique vocal and instrumental sound he sought.
Today, Polyphonic Spree is known for its unique blend of instrumentation such as choir, flute, viola, cello, piano, electronic keyboards, and trombone. The group released a debut album, The Beginning Stages of…, in 2002, followed by Together We’re Heavy in 2004. Soon after, The Polyphonic Spree received accolades for its contributions to film soundtracks, most notably Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and Mozart and the Whale (2005.)
Over the years, The Polyphonic Spree has contributed music to additional films such as Keeping Up with the Steins (2006), Visioneers (2008), The Lorax (2012), and most recently, The Big Short (2015.) Notable singles from the group include “Hanging Around,” “Light and Day,” “Solider Girl,” “Hold Me Now,” and “Two Thousand Places.” The group hasn’t released any new albums since 2013, but continues to tour and perform with an enormous lineup of more than twenty musicians at a time.
