The Canadian indie rock band Broken Social Scene was established in 1999 by founding members Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew. Today, the band boasts anywhere between six and eighteen members at any given time, with extensive orchestrations to include everything from violins, horns, woodwinds, and the like. But long before Broken Social Scene expanded its lineup to such an extent, Drew and Canning recorded a significant amount of material as a duo, releasing their debut, Feel Good Lost, in 2001.
Over time, Broken Social Scene added more instrumentation to their material, calling for an increase to the lineup. In 2005, the group released a self-titled album that would become their big international breakthrough; Broken Social Scene rose into the top ten on the indie charts in the United States and earned the band a Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. Around this time, the band also began composing music for film scores, contributing music for the films Half Nelson (2006), Snow Cake (2006), and The Tracey Fragments (2007.) The group’s single “Lover’s Spit” was also featured in both Queer as Folk and Wicker Park; the song “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was featured in the 2009 film The Time Traveler’s Wife.
Today, Broken Social Scene is a regular on the festival circuit and also makes appearances on late night television programs, most recently having appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Broken Social Scene’s latest album, Hug of Thunder, was released in the summer of 2017. The album features the songs “Skyline” and “Stay Happy,” and rose into the top twenty on both the Canadian and American indie charts.
