The American indie pop band known as Foster the People was established in Los Angeles in 2009 by founding members Mark Pontius and Mark Foster. The duo had an immediate rise to prominence with the release of their debut smash hit, “Pumped up Kicks,” which earned the group not only a record deal but also two Grammy Award nominations.
“Pumped Up Kicks” was initially posted to the duo’s website as a few download, but it was the massive attention drawn to the track that led it to go viral and earned the group a performance opportunity at South by Southwest in 2010. Ultimately the group signed to Startime International, a Columbia imprint, and the duo began performing the song at festivals around the world while also preparing for a debut album.
Foster the People first released a self-titled EP in early 2011 before releasing their debut, Torches. The duo quickly became a favorite for television licensing, and their fan base began to grow even more as songs such as “Pumped Up Kicks,” “Houdini,” “Helena Beat,” “Don’t Stop,” and “Call It What You Want” were featured on shows such as Entourage, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, and in films such as Friends with Benefits.
Since that time, Foster the People has released the additional album Supermodel (2014) featuring songs such as “Coming of Age,” “Best Friend,” and “Are You What You Want to Be?” Foster the People has announced their preparations for another studio album, scheduled for release sometime in 2017.
