The American indie rock band known as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was established in New York in 2000. Founded by members Brian Chase, Nick Zinner, and Karen O, the earliest beginnings of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs began when two members met in college. Brian Chase and Karen O were both studying music, and they forged a friendship. A year after their meeting, Karen transferred to New York for her studies, where she met Nick Zinner. Karen and Nick initially formed an acoustic duo called “Unitard,” but reached out to Brian Chase instead to create a trio under the name Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs became known on the local New York punk scene, and by 2001, they’d released a self-titled EP. A gig at the prestigious South by Southwest festival followed, which garnered the attention of Wichita Recordings and brought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs their first offer for a recording deal. After signing with the label, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released a debut album, Fever to Tell, in 2003. On the strength of the single “Maps,” which received significant airplay, Fever to Tell rose into the top of the alternative charts and quickly established the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as one of the eras most popular alternative bands.
Since Fever to Tell, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have also released the albums: Show Your Bones (2006), It’s Blitz! (2009), and most recently, Mosquito (2013.) Notable singles from the albums include: “Maps,” “Gold Lion,” “Zero,” “Heads Will Roll,” and “Sacrilege,” and three of four albums from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are currently on a hiatus, but are expected to return to recording and performing within the next year.
