The psychedelic rock band MGMT was created by founding members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser when the two were freshmen college students. MGMT signed to Columbia Records in 2006 and released their debut album, Oracular Spectacular shortly thereafter. Touring dates, in support of such bands as Radiohead, immediately followed, and MGMT found themselves with an ever-growing fan base, especially overseas.
For much of 2008 and 2009, MGMT performed at a variety of music festivals in the United States and abroad, including the Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Meredith Music and Splendour in the Grass Festivals in Australia, the Dockville Festival in Germany, and the Virgin Music Festival. By the time MGMT returned to the states, the band was ready to write and record a follow-up album.
Congratulations arrived in 2010 and spawned the singles “Flash Delirium,” “Siberian Breaks,” “It’s Working,” and “Congratulations.” Performances on Saturday Night Live, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon followed, and MGMT performed at the Coachella Festival later that year as one of the core bands featured.
In recent years, MGMT has continued to perform and record, with the band’s current lineup of Goldwasser, VanWyngarden, Matt Asti, Will Berman, and James Richardson. MGMT most recently released the album MGMT in 2013, and plans for an upcoming tour are currently underway.
