Twenty One Pilots was established in 2009 by musicians Nick Thomas, Chris Salih and Tyler Joseph. Thomas and Joseph had played together during their years attending college in Columbus, Ohio, and upon teaming up with Salih they initially had a trio. Salih and Thomas left Twenty One Pilots, however, and Joseph was joined by Josh Dun, to form a duo. Twenty One Pilots self-released its debut album, Twenty One Pilots, in 2009, followed by Regional at Best two years later, also self-released. The success of the albums caught the attention of Atlantic Records, and Twenty One Pilots signed with them in 2012.
A series of sold-out shows throughout 2012 set the stage for Twenty One Pilots’s major label debut, Vessel, which arrived in the following year. Prior to that, the band has also released an EP, Three Songs. Vessel has so far been an enormous success, spawning the hit “Holding on to You,” with the singles “Lovely” and “Guns for Hands” also faring well.
Most recently, Twenty One Pilots began a tour opening for Fall Out Boy, and the band performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, singing “House of Gold.” Twenty One Pilots has so far received award nominations from MTV for the song “Holding On to You” and as Best Push Act. Twenty One Pilots has plans to return to the studio soon to prepare for their next album release.
